What’s in a Label? Vegan and Cruelty-Free Makeup Brands Have More to Say

You’ve probably noticed there are a lot more vegan and cruelty-free makeup brands these days. Or maybe you’ve heard about some skincare companies pledging to be transparent. But what do these buzz words even mean? They’re all part of a larger movement sweeping the industry: clean beauty. And despite how it sounds, it doesn’t have anything to do with washing your face more.

If you're interested in vegan and cruelty-free makeup brands, you're probably looking for the same qualities in your skincare. Clean makeup and skincare products only use safe, non-toxic ingredients, leaving out anything that is potentially harmful. “You want the ingredients to be as simple as possible, free of fragrance, and parabens,” says Christina Dukes, PharmD, BOPC, a pharmacy specialist. “The products you buy should be from manufacturers that value transparency about the ingredients that are in your beauty products—you should have no trouble getting the truth about what’s actually in them and how they were tested for safety,” she says. Fortunately, that’s exactly what you get with Pour Moi Skincare products. So, when you see these words touted on Pour Moi labels, here's what they mean:

Transparency:

Nope, it doesn’t mean you can see through the bottle. It means the brand is telling you what’s in the product. Pour Moi includes a full list of the ingredients we use on our website. In an A-to-Z glossary, you can see where the ingredient was sourced from (whether it’s synthetic or natural). You can also learn what it does, and which product it’s found in.

Cruelty-free and vegan:

“We can safely create and formulate skincare without hurting animals or abusing them because of what they produce,” says Ulli Haslacher, founder and president of Pour Moi Skincare. A prime example is shark oil, she says. “No shark should die because of skincare’s demand of Squalane Oil, as it can be extracted from sugar canes or olives,” she says. Not only does Pour Moi leave out any animal-derived ingredients, but we also won’t do any testing on animals. Pour Moi is certified cruelty-free by PETA and Leaping Bunny.

Sustainable:

Ingredients that were sustainably sourced are those that are harvested ethically, and without damaging the environment. For example, harvesting palm oil, used in skincare for its moisturizing and anti-aging benefits, can destroy rain forests. Rain forests are the lungs of the planet that help create the climate, says Ulli. “We have to go the extra mile to source ingredients based on sustainability,” she says. Keep an eye out for this ingredient's use by vegan and cruelty-free makeup brands, and find out if it was sourced sustainably.

Toxin free:

Toxins get big buzz these days. What are they? Ingredients that may be harmful to our bodies. Pour Moi Skincare is formulated without parabens, mineral oil, mercury, and the packaging is BPA-free.

Fragrance free:

What’s the harm with adding a little perfume to a moisturizer? The problem is, synthetic fragrance is an irritant that can send skin into a tailspin. You won’t find any fragrance in Pour Moi products—just quality anti-aging and hydrating ingredients.

Made in France:

Why this matters: Pour Moi not only adheres to US standards for product formulation, but also the EU’s standards, which are much stricter. But the main reason Pour Moi is made in France is for the water, says Ulli. “For centuries, the benefits of France spring waters, which is rich in minerals have been carefully examined, recorded and experimented with in treatments to heal skin and beautify its appearance,” she says. And today, France is leading the way in keeping its water clean and pure. “Pour Moi has integrated the benefits of mineral water from France to the latest scientific breakthroughs of climate smart skincare to create a mix of the best of nature and science that delivers exceptional results,” says Ulli.
